Investigation – Chevrolet Avenue Bridge
The Chevrolet Avenue Bridge spans the Flint River between Third Avenue and Glenwood Avenue in the City of Flint. Global was retained during bridge renovations to conduct a study of soils surrounding the bridge and provide required documentation. The purpose of the study was to characterize the soils near the bridge and identify areas of environmental concern.
Soil borings were performed using a Geoprobe to a depth of ten feet. Each boring was logged in accordance with USCS standards, scanned for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) using a Photoionization Detector (PID), and sampled for VOCs, Semi Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs), and metals in accordance with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Standards. Laboratory result indicated levels of metals, SVOCs, and VOCs above all Tier 1 Risk Based Screening Levels. Contaminated soil was hauled offsite and disposed.
While conducting the borings, an abandoned sewer line and an underground storage tank (UST) was discovered. Global collected waste characterization samples and found PCB contamination in the UST. Global successfully removed all contaminated and soils and liquids and properly disposed of them
